Zesty lime and chilli crab balls

Zesty lime and chilli crab balls served with chilli sauce

OK so I may have lied a little about them being crab, they are in fact made from crab sticks, or seafood sticks as they’re more commonly called these days. I’ve eaten them for years, my mum will recall it was my Auntie’s fault and I happy ate them heated up with butter. By adding some extra thai flavours, they are really moreish and cheap to boot.

  • 16 crab/seafood sticks
  • 1/4 lemongrass stalk
  • 1 birdseye chilli
  • 2tbsp chilli sauce (I used medium/hot but you could use sweet)
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 egg

{Makes 10-12 crab balls}

  1. Finely chop the lemongrass and chilli. Whisk the egg in a bowl.
  2. Put the seafood sticks in a blender and blend well, adding the lime juice, lemongrass and chilli, egg and chilli sauce until they’re mixed in well.
  3. Take tablespoons of the mixture and roll into balls.
  4. Heat up a deep fat fryer, or a oil in a wok. If using a deep fat fryer, make sure you put the basket in before placing the balls in. Put in four or five balls at a time and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Place on a piece of kitchen roll to remove excess oil before serving.

    Wow! Fantastic, simple recipe (Zesty lime and chilli crab balls). Very excited and hope to try it this week. And actually, I prefer that it’s crabsticks rather than crab as it’ll be easier (and cheaper) to do :)

    These look great, and definitely a bit cheaper than real crab. I imagine they’re pretty similar to Chinese fish balls as they’re made from the same stuff (surimi) as crab sticks.

    Not sure one wants to know what is in crabsticks, seem to remember blood plasma is one of the ingredients. Tasty.

    These look really tasty! I am going to try your Pierogi recipe next weekend too – they look amazing.
