The best whoopie pies – a gift from Webstaurant

A while back I tweeted that I’d tried a whoopie pie but it was crispy and I thought they were supposed to be soft. Stepping into the brink: Steve Ziegler from Webstaurant store over in America. He kindly sent me over the MOST AMAZING whoopie pies ever!
I remember reading somewhere that whoopie pies were made from leftover batter from cakes. They originate from the Amish community and this is exactly where my pies have come from. Yes, straight from Pennsylvania, the Bird in Hand bakery to be exact!
So what did I get in my parcel? Four types of whoopie pies: Traditional chocolate with white creamy filling (like Oreo’s), red velvet, pumpkin and chocolate with peanut butter filling. They all tasted wonderful, I think the chocolate and peanut butter was probably my favourite, but only by a sliver! The pies were wonderfully soft and survived the long trip across the Atlantic very well thanks to the careful packing they did at The Bird in Hand and at Webstaurant before shipping it over to me. I think I can safely that I won’t ever be buying another half-assed whoopie pie AGAIN!
In my parcel I also got a Shoofly pie: pretty much molasses in pie crust and it’s wonderful, though I can only nibble a small bit at a time as it left me buzzing! Again, Shoofly pie is a traditional Amish dish and you can learn all about it here:
The Bird in Hand Bakery looks like an amazing place to visit and if you ever get the chance to go there, make sure you try the whoopie pies, the shoofly fly, the peach pies, quite frankly anything you can lay your hands on!
