A few years ago I discovered a life changing fact: You can make delicious donuts from biscuit dough. Sometimes I comb through the Pillsbury website to see what kind of food and recipes they’re promoting. None of it is ever healthy or vegan, but they have a lot of ideas for easy food prep. Some have even inspired several of my own meals. For example, these Fall Spice Donuts.
The amazing thing about these vegan donuts is that they take no time to prepare. Other donut recipes require yeast work which can be off putting. These suckers take very little time, and are legit. They’re light, and doughy, and just plain yummy.
With fall flavors popping up I figured a donut to reflect this change would be nice. Cinnamon and nutmeg give you that cozy feeling without too much going on. Just a nice simple spice.
Fall Spice Donuts
Makes 8-10 vegan donuts and 8-10 vegan donut holes
- 8-10 store-bought raw vegan biscuits (I like Immaculate Baking Company’s)
- neutral tasting oil for frying
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
1. In a large pot start heating up your oil over medium heat. This is going to be a deep fry, and not a pan fry. Be sure to add enough oil for the job!
2. Use a 3/4″ – 1″ circle cookie cutter to cut a hole in the middle of each biscuit. Keep the dough cut-out to make donut holes.
3. Make the spiced sugar by combining the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a wide shallow bowl.
4. Once the oil heats up to 350 degrees add a few donuts to the pot. Fry on both sides until golden. Carefully pull the donuts out with a fry ladle. Using tongs dip each donut in the spiced sugar from front to back. Place them on a wire rack to cool.
5. Allow the oil to go back up to 350, and repeat the process with the rest of the donuts and donut holes.
