If you missed my tweets and Facebook updates, we were burgled last Monday night. We came downstairs Tuesday morning to discover the sitting room furniture moved around a bit and then realised that the camera was missing. And my laptop. And our phones. And £300 of Euros I had for my trip to Amsterdam at the weekend. We couldn’t even call the police from ours as we don’t have a home phone. Luckily our next door neighbour is a stay at home mum so we borrowed her phone and internet (tried tracing my phone as it had a tracker on it).
They came in through our front door which was unlocked – we still haven’t worked out how as we never use it and therefore assumed it was locked. Luckily our insurance has covered it and we are keeping the doors locked even when we’re in the house. It feels like a horrid thing to do as we live in a relatively quiet area of Leeds but if it means this never having to happen again, I’m totally down with that!
I think possibly the most irritating thing about it all was that with my laptop going missing, I lost all my photos and more importantly, all the work I’d done on my new website design. Illustrations, all the coding work. GONE. Yes, I should’ve backed it up. I know. I even have 48Gb of Dropbox space but I hadn’t finished setting it up. That is my lesson learned I think. Still, it was literally the worst laptop in the world – it had a really high spec but with a 17″ screen it was battery draining and clumsy. The build quality was also pretty poor.
As for the burglar – no fingerprints, no arrests. Another place a couple of streets away was also burgled. And a neighbour said they saw someone trying the door handles on our street a couple of weeks ago so it was obviously a planned attack in a way. It wasn’t just an opportunist thief. So that’s what’s been going on in my world in the past week. Sorry that I am behind on my blog reading now. And doing my own posts. I still have a few reviews for lovely companies to do but they’re all backed up until my new camera arrives.
P.S. BACK UP!
Oh, I’m so sorry that happened – hope you get everything back together and sorted soon x
That’s awful 🙁 I’ve only been burgled once, but it was awful and enough to make me super security conscious since then. The intrusion into your private space is one of the worst parts of it. That…and losing all your hard work of course. Still, looking in the bright side, you get a new Mac 🙂 xx
oh no!!! I haven’t had the internet at home in a while (only at work) and I missed any tweets about this. Poor thing! Losing your laptop and camera is horrible, so is the idea of someone in your house at night. Lock those doors!
