I have to say that as a city, Leeds is very fortunate to have a good variety of restaurants and cafes to suit most palates and budgets. But one of the things that I love about visiting London is actually just inside King’s Cross Station: Leon. If you’ve visited one of their places you’ll probably love it as much as I do, except when they’ve run out of pecan pie and I’m hungover.
So when I was asked whether I wanted to review Filmore & Union, I checked out the menu and was happy to see that they take the same approach as Leon. Healthy food and clearly labelled for people with dietary requirements, like Mr LTT. They are have gluten free options, and have just been approved by Coeliac UK which is fantastic. Being gluten free I think is one of the biggest challenges for a person wanting to eat out – it’s a bit of a minefield!
I visited the branch in Victoria Quarter, Leeds but there’s also another one in Leeds in Moortown and further afield in York, Harrogate, Wetherby and Newcastle.
I really fancied the breakfast options so I ordered poached eggs on rye with hummus, portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and pesto. As you can see from the photo above, it really has the wow factor when placed in front of you. It tasted even better than it looked if that is possible. The eggs were poached perfectly, the meaty mushrooms and gentle chewiness of the bread, the crunch from the seeds! The garlicky pesto really just brought it all together.
Mr LTT ordered the Healthy Granola – he loved the nuts and seeds in it. I tasted it and it was gorgeous, not too sweet, lots of oats too. They served it with soya milk so it was perfect for him. I only wish they’d had some soya yoghurt as usually the granola comes with dairy yoghurt. Not pictured is the flat white, espresso and juice he had. As somewhat of a coffee
snob connoisseur he said it was very good quality coffee and the soya milk in the flat white was done perfectly (it does split if not heated to the right temperature). The juice was also very fresh, but sadly I can’t remember what it was!
Will you take a look at this spread of cakes? How beautiful! I should also mention that whilst it is in the Victoria Quarter which can get pretty chilly as this time of year, there’s heaters and also furry blankets to keep you toasty!
Filmore & Union serve breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and in some of their venues, dinner!
